Overview of Course

This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to operate a forklift truck safely in accordance with all relevant legislative requirements. Competence in this unit, does not in itself result in a HRWL licence to operate this plant.

Forklift truck means a powered industrial truck equipped with lifting media made up of a mast and an elevating load carriage to which is attached a pair of fork arms or other attachments that can be raised 900 mm or more above the ground but does not include a pedestrian-operated truck or a pallet truck.

A person performing this work is required to hold a forklift truck High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). The latest release of this unit can be found at the following link:

Who Should Apply For This Course and Why?

This unit targets anyone who requires training to obtain a licence to operate a forklift truck. This may include those who are typically employed in the construction industry, unskilled workers, young adults 18+ years of age, apprentices, trainees, mature age workers or a combination of all of these. 

Training and Assessment Information

This course is delivered through structured self-study and in the workplace.

You will participate in a total of 26 hours of self-paced training and assessment by distance and industry work-based training and assessment.

You will be provided with a Learner Guide (learning materials) which you will need to read and complete the activities in the guide. You will also be required to read through and complete Assessment Task 1: Knowledge Questions before completing the assessment. This is classified as the structed self-study training component.

In addition to the above, you will need to complete structured workplace learning and assessment activities whilst at work.

Student Support

. reasonable adjustment in assessment
. social events 
. information about external sources of support.

You may not have studied for a while, may have English as a second language or need additional assistance with literacy or numeracy. 

We will identify any additional support needs you may have at the time of application and enrolment and may prepare a Student Support Plan for you based on those needs.

You are required to bring your own laptop with Office 365 (or similar program) to all classes. These costs are not included in your course fees. Specifications for laptops and associated costs are included below.

What Are The Entry Requirements?

Academy of the Northern Territory Tech Skills has the following entry requirements:

You must:

. participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs; and
. have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills as tested through a language, literacy and numeracy assessment. Students will need to achieve ACSF level 2 for reading, writing, numeracy and oral communication to enter the course.

How Much Does It Cost?

The costs for this course are as follows:

Course fees do not include laptops or software – see information above. Please note that you will also be required to provide a National Police Certificate and some workplaces may require certain immunisations. These will be at your own cost. You can read more about this in the Student Handbook, and we encourage you to do so, especially if you have any concerns around these requirements.

A detailed payment plan and payment arrangements are provided in the Offer Letter and Student Agreement. You must pay all your course fees and on time. Non-payment of fees may result in cancellation of enrolment.

How Can I Apply?

To apply for this course, you are required to complete an enrolment form. We will then contact you to conduct a course entry interview and LLN assessment.

If your application is successful, we will send you an Offer Letter and Student Agreement. You should make sure you read through this document carefully to make sure you are happy with all of the terms and conditions. If you are, then simply sign the document and send it back to us.

Once we receive this, we will email you to confirm your enrolment and issue an invoice for the first payment.
